The movie, like others by Coppola, offers ennui as an aesthetic and poetic device: and while this may have been tolerable and even interesting in a low budget film, it becomes an act of monstrous narcissism when carried out at this enormous expense. Pretty but unreflective, the movie demonstrates that Coppola has not grown any wiser or deeper as she ages, only more ambitious, and her filmmaking powers are dwarfed by her production budget. Coppola's Marie Antoinette is naive, weak, and emptyheaded (two lines recited from Rousseau do not make for philosophy!). Her death does not provoke any real displeasure or sympathy in the audience, only a kind of confusion as to whether the personnage we are watching is as cognizant of her situation as we are of our own (a point which is rather dubious throughout the film). The film's deliberate anachronisms are mildly suggestive, but the unintentional anachronisms--particularly the essential lack of any real understanding of the historical society portrayed--seems a failure and ultimately a demonstration of the filmmmaker's lack of curiousity or courage to explore a world unlike that of her own experience. In a nutshell, I never once was seduced by the illusion of an alternate reality or forgot that I was watching a Sofia Coppola film--a long and boring one.
